Geophysics

What is Geophysics?

Geophysics is the study of the Earth using quantitative physical methods, principally by measuring the gravitational, magnetic, electrical, and seismic properties of the Earth’s surface and interior.

Different rocks have different physical properties. Measuring their differences provides information about the distribution and composition of rocks on the Earth’s surface and its interior and also gives a three-dimensional picture of the Earth’s crust. Scientists use these information to better understand the evolution and the structures of the Earth and more effectively explore for minerals, hydrocarbons, and water resources.

Objectives of geophysical studies in the SGS

  • Exploration for groundwater
  • Exploration for minerals deposits
  • Exploration for radioactive elements, such as uranium, potassium, and thorium and their host rocks
  • Exploration of the areas of faults and fissures that may cause landslides, subsidence, and other geological hazards
  • Creation of structural maps of the subsurface, showing the geologic models of the underground areas
  • Assist in discovering buried monuments, caves, and canals
