Automated Processing of Earthquakes

The Saudi Geological Survey uses the Hydra software in making seismic analysis in order to carry out an automated survey for the locations and magnitudes of earthquakes. This software automatically determines and captures the seismic waves, although this can be carried out manually, and if necessary, the time and place of the earthquake are determined within few minutes after the transmission and arrival of the data. This software can record 500 seismic events. It can also plot them on a map, as demonstrated in figures 1-6. By clicking a listed event in the list of events, the control window for that event is displayed, which gives more details about the seismic parameters for that event.

The table also indicates the percentage errors of the expected times of wave arrivals that were recorded in the seismograph stations. These errors sometimes occur due to the weak initial arrivals of seismic waves, especially when there is noise in the recording. Then, recalculation will be carried out until an acceptable recording of data is obtained.
