Geological Maps

The SGS conducts geologic surveys in all regions of Saudi Arabia, with specific focus areas in the Arabian Shield and in the sedimentary cover. The surveys shall produce geologic maps of different scales for all of the regions. The SGS also creates and publishes detailed structural maps, which are used in infrastructure projects and in geologic hazard studies. They are also used in mining and quarrying activities.

Current Targets

  • Completion of a series of geological maps of the sedimentary cover in all regions of the Kingdom using different scales.
  • Completion of a series of geological maps of the Arabian Shield in different scales.
  • Study of the composition and geologic characteristics of crystalline and sedimentary rocks in order to locate potential deposits of minerals and industrial rocks.
  • Study of geologic structures related to subsidence and cavitation in areas with sedimentary cover, fractures, landslides, and crustal movements in the Kingdom’s regions.
